Something that can wreck a family. Something that will change the victims life FOREVER!
How do you feel when you find out?
When its a Stranger, this has to be a worst nightmare for everyone. we read about and watch it on the news and hope it never happens to us or anyone we know - not even strangers.
When it's a Friend, it will really hurt, because you feel betrayed, guilty - trust has been broken. This person has had meals, parties and everything you would do with your family, because you see them as your extended family.
When it's family it hurts like hell! The family is torn and will need counseling.
Devastation sets in, embarrassment denial and guilt. No one expect this from family.
But remember...
Ultimately, it's about the VICTIM. IT SHOULDN'T MATTER WHO THE OFFENDER IS, AN OFFENDER IS A OFFENDER. in life we will be faced with devastating times, its up to us to do something about it! Start by talking to your children about sexual abuse, assure them that you will always be there for them. Build up their confidence so that they will be able to come to you, if something like this was ever to happen to them.
Investigate and get the facts, talk to your child about when and where it happened - How many times? Take your child to the doctor immediately.
Families PLEASE don't fall apart this is a time to come together and be strong! The victim needs to know that everyone is okay. The outcome of telling someone about the abuse, runs through the victims head a million times before they say anything, especially when it's a close friend or family member. Don't put that extra stress on them. Unite and get stronger TOGETHER!
Some child molesters are often molested as a child and then becomes the Offender later in their life. It's a horrible cycle that continues. They also need help!
What do we do about this?
Talk to your children about inappropriate touching.
Inappropriate touching:
* Touching in the private areas on the body
* Hugging (When it feels wrong)
* When a child is asked to touch an adult or authoritative figure
* kissing (when it feels wrong)
A child can feel that something is wrong, but can be too young to understand what's going on. i.e. When an adult makes a child feel uncomfortable to be around them.
Warning Signs:
* emulating sexual positions
* acting seductive or "Fresh" as parents tend to say.
* avoiding the contact with people - especially a person of the same sex as the abuser.
* Passive or aggressive behavior Older children may act out and can be destructive. they can also turn to alcohol,drugs or worst, they may attempt suicide to escape the pain.
Physical Warning signs:
If you young child has trouble sitting, standing; grabs at their private area, swelling, bruising and bleeding in the private area,
Young female victims, can often contract an STD from the abuser and also become pregnant.
Sexual abuser can be:
* A Stranger
* A Teacher or Authoritative figure
* A caregiver
* A Family friend
* A Family member - Step-parents
IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT! DON'T BLAME YOURSELF YOU'RE THE VICTIM - REMEMBER THAT! SPEAK OUT! TELL SOMEONE, A COUNSELOR A FRIEND, SOMEONE YOU TRUST- A POLICE OFFICER.
IF IT'S HARD FOR YOU TO SPEAK ABOUT IT WRITE A LETTER AND SLIP IT INTO YOUR MOMS PURSE, GIVE IT TO SOMEONE YOU TRUST. YOU HAVE TO TELL SOMEONE. DON'T BEAR THIS BURDEN ALONE.
What goes through the mind of a Molester?
What goes on in the mind of the victim?
What goes on in the mind of the parent?
How does the family react?
How do you begin to heal?
REMEMBER YOU'RE NOT ALONE - IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT but Please SPEAK OUT!
